Problem trying to install DLink DWL-520+ Wireless NIC into P4S533-x

Bob

Unit was sold by another individual who is nasty to deal with.
Have the following, unit runs fine with nothing at all installed in PCI
slots, but completely locks up if I try to install DLink DWL-520+ Wireless
NIC. Wireless NIC tested in my working machine running same OS and been
working fine for a couple of days...also, other sameWireless cards working
in this customer's other computers, (older non-Asus machines) so I have
isolated to this computer.
Tried 3x wireless Nics into 3x of the PCI slots. Also have 3x versions of
drivers, tried them all as well...Once card is in, within seconds or minutes
computer locks completely, depending on driver version, ultimately in every
case has to be hard reset for cannot warm boot. Cannot find where conflict
lies for I have to physically uninstall NIC to get unit to boot and run
again...tried disabling onboard LAN to no avail. in one case. Unit has P4
2.4GHz Intel, 256MB RAM, Maxtor 80GB HDD, W2k, Radeon 7k in AGP. Everything
running onboard for again the PCI slots are completely empty. Unit seems
fine in empty state...have had it run a few days and no locking...
Any tips on fixing this for having to contact indiviual who sold it will be
difficult and end user will suffer in long run...

thanks

Bob, didja go into control panel\system and check the properties on the
card? U can see if there are any conflicts and if you are nice, it might
let you change the
address settings a bit. Sounds like you are getting hardware conflicts.
Also, in the drivers for your cards, there should be a 'setup' that might
let you change the
dma or irq settings as needed.

There seem to be plenty of posts about this card in Google. One
mentions problems mixing a Creative sound card with this card.
Since slot 1 and slot 5 share an IRQ, try sticking the DWL-520+
in one of those slots, while the other slot of the pair is blank.
(I.e. Put card in slot 5, leave slot 1 blank.) That will prevent
the card from sharing a physical interrupt signal with any other
card. (This would be an issue, if the Dlink driver doesn't like
sharing an IRQ.)

I had the same problem with P4PE-X and the DWL-520+ on a customer's
new system.

Turns out that the system doesn't really "lock up", it only appears
to due to excessive CPU use when the card can't find a wireless
connection. It works fine once it's connected to a wireless
network.

What I did was disable the card (not remove it) in Windows XP's
Device Manager until I could get the rest of the wireless network
up and running. No problems since.
