Has anyone seen a problem switching users.

When one user is logged in, a second user can not log in. At the welcome
screen (with one user logged in) I click on a second user and it attempts to
log in but returns back to the welcome screen. It works fine when you
logout the first person. It used to work fine a month ago.

I have windows XP Pro running in a home network with one other computer
running 98. Window XP is up to date with all downloads.

TIA,
Ken

Hi Ken,

Thanks for posting!

I understand that you are unable to switch to a second user when one user
is logged in. If I have misunderstood your concerns, please feel free to
let me know.

Based on my research, it could be related to the Terminal Services. Please
confirm whether the services status to started and put it to Automatic.

1. Click Start, Click Run, type "Services.msc" (without quotation mark)

2. Locate Terminal Services, Select Automatic, Click Start Button.

3. Reboot the computer.

Please test the issue again. Please help me know the result when you are
free.

I hope my information helps. If there is anything that is unclear, please
feel free to let me know.

Thanks & Regards,

Jason Tan

Thanks Jason.

I changed it to Automatic and it did work for awhile... It seems to be
intermitted. I double checked and Terminal Services was started and set to
automatic.

Recap of the problem: When one user is logged in (home peer to peer network)
and selects "Switch User" a second user will click on user icon and xp acts
like its logging in but returns back to the welcom screen. The second
sometimes may login after the third or fourth time. But if the first user
logs out then no problem.

Any other ideas.

Ken

Hi Ken,

Thanks for reply!

Based on the current situation, I would like to provide you with the
following suggestions for your reference:

Step 1: Please test the issue in Clean Boot environment. Can the issue be
reproduced?
==========================================================================
1. Click the "Start" and select "Run".
2. Type msconfig in the open box, and then click "OK".
3. On the "Services" tab, click to choose "Hide All Microsoft Services" and
click to choose Disable All.
4. On the Startup page, click Disable All.
5. Click "OK" to reboot your computer.
6. When you see the message, choose "Don't show this message or launch the
System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" and click OK.

Note: A Clean Boot will allow us to isolate any device drivers or programs
that are loading at startup that may be causing a conflict.

Step 2: Please create a new user account, and logon to system with the new
user account. Can the issue be reproduced?
============================================================================
=======================================
1. Click Start, and click Control Panel.
2. Double-click "User Accounts".
3. Click the "Create a new account" link.
4. Follow the instructions to create a new account with Administrator
rights.
5. Log off the current user account and then log on the new account.

I look forward to your response. If there is anything that is unclear,
please feel free to let me know.

Thanks & Regards,

Jason Tan

Jason Hi
I started experiencing the same problem; I followed your ifirst set of
nstructions about switching terminal services to Automatic, rebooting etc.
but the problem continues.
Regards

I got the same problem as Ken
I TRIED YOUR setting terminal services to AUTO but when I click START, I
got this erro:

COULD NOT START THE TERMINAL SERVICE IN TH ELOCAL COMPUTER.
ERROR 1083: THE EXECUTEABLE PROGRAM THAT THIS SERVICE IS CONFIGURED TO RUN
IN DOES NOT IMPLEMENT THE SERVICE.

Will you clean boot environment solution work even if my TERMINAL SERVICES
DOESN'T EVEN START?

Jason,

I have tried all that you suggested in this thread. When I log out & return
to the welcome screen and log in as another user, for a split second I see
the desk top of the user from which I just logged out and then instantly
return to the welcome screen. It's looks like it returns to the same user
thread that I was logged in previously and never logs in based on the new
user. Based on my research I have tried all of the following to no avail:

1. Set Terminal services to start automatically.
2. disabled all the services other than microsoft upon start up.
3. Set the Event logs to "overwrite as needed" and increased log file size.

I would greatly appreciate any and all help with this matter!

Thanks,
Ralph

I have encountered this before! For me, it was some type of "bad" spyware
that "forced" a "log-off" during the start-ip of the user. I needed to do a
repair re-install on top of the installed version, so as to fix the replaced
Windows files. Once I was able to log back on to it successfully, I scanned
for spywares, which it was "full" of.

Thanks for your response! I just built this computer and find it unlikely
that I could have received spyware that quickly. I have had no other
problems with this machine. It has been running great exept the switching
users problem. I will try a repair-reinstall tonight.

Thanks,
Ralph
