Problem Starting Windows XP

Peter Beare

I've been having trouble with Windows starting and saying
that C:\WINDOWS\system 32\tools\LostRun.exe is corrupt or
missing and I haven't been able to repair it and even
reinstalling hasn't helped - in fact now it won't even
start at all. Any suugestions?

Lots of discussion threads show up on Google Groups for this file. No
mention that I can find about what the file is from (it's not a Windows
file). The general advice seems to be disable it via Start> Run> MSCONFIG.
No one's responded that this method has caused them any trouble. So either
it worked or it banged out their computer and they couldn't reply. ;)

PS: In one discussion, someone mentioned the filename appeared after
installing something for their motherboard.

I do nothing but click Sherlock Holmes' magnifying glass, copy, paste and
hit the GO button.
It's really tough. So is using Help. Start/Help and Support.
Apparently most people don't know what the Help function is, let alone how
to use it. If they did we would not see the same dozen or so questions asked
twenty times a day. Quite often three posts away.
I know that most people aren't using a real newsreader. But if they can't
use Help, how are they gonna do anything else?
I am sure that 90% or better of my posts never get read by the person who
posted the question. About the time I am ready to quit posting answers, here
comes a post back with a thank you. I maybe helped someone.
Lots of smart people here who have helped me many times. I am just trying
to return the favor.
Do you have any questions?

Do you refer often to the Der Keiler site, or did you find the "right" post
through searching finesse in Google, etc.?

For some reason, I had read your explanation as a joke!
Please post here as much as you can stand to, even though gratitude is so
rarely shown and some OP's doubtless never even read the posts. You are one
of the more pleasant, thoughtful, original and useful experts here.

I was serious. I am no expert. I know a couple of things. I know about
the gratitude. I just try to help. I make my share of sarcastic replies. I
have not posted a lot of the ones I wanted to post. No point except for the
regulars getting a kick or two out of them.
I just stop and think, "How would I like a smartass reply when I am trying
to find out something I don't know the answer to?" Although it is really,
really tough when the question looks like a five year old typed it. :)
