problem starting up XP - "Minidump" error message

Hi

I'm using XP Home edition on a brand new computer and
have encountered the following problem -
On start-up the system gets as far as the first Windows
screen then shuts down.

I had this on the computer - also new - that this one
replaced.
So far, it has only happened once on this computer but on
the last one I would have to repeatedly try to restart,
eventually getting past a black screen. The computer fans
carried on working - it just wouldn't boot up. Once
started it was fine. (The supplier - Novatech UK - was
brilliant and replaced hard drive/ processor, etc but
could not replicate the fault but built me a new
computer.)

Occasionally on the previous computer- and after the
problem today a "Windows has recovered from a serious
error" message came up with the following:
C:\\Windows| Minidump\Mini092504-01.dmp
C:\\Document~1\etc to TEMP\WER1.tmpdiroo\sysdata.xml

I'd be very grateful for help. It seems to be more of a
software issue if it's appeared on this computer as well.

Also installed at the moment: Office 2003, Norton
Internet Security 2004, CD writing prog. and broadband
modem.

Many thanks in anticipation

Kathryn

Try starting in safe mode and see if the problem occurs. If it does not,
try starting again in normal mode and use start/run/msconfig. You can then
selectively enabled and disable startup items to see which one is causing
the problem.

Thanks - all OK this morning but will try what you
suggest if the problem recurs.

Kathryn.
