problem resolving yahoo.com mx records

Mike Varley

Hi

We have our external dns server setup in a fashion that appears to work fine
with one exception. If I run nslookup on the dns server itself or on any
other machine e.g. one of our mailservers I cannot resolve the mx records
for yahoo.com. Consequently mail is not being delivered to this domain.
Other mx records are resolved fine including yahoo.co.uk.

Cheers

Mike

Non-authoritative answer:
yahoo.co.uk MX preference = 20, mail exchanger = mx2.mail.ukl.yahoo.com
yahoo.co.uk MX preference = 10, mail exchanger = mx1.mail.ukl.yahoo.com

mx2.mail.ukl.yahoo.com internet address = 217.12.11.64

<snippage>

given the nslookup test shown I'd exclude a firewall problem
(in any case check that the DNS is allowed to query/use all
external servers on 53/TCP, not only UDP) that said, if you
want some help you should give out some more details, e.g.
how your (DNS) server is configured i.e. Are you using some
dns forwarders ? Which root-hints are you using ? What says
the "check server" on your DNS server MMC ? There are any
events in your eventlog ?

Hi ObiWan

Thanks for the reply.

We think we've fixed it after much digging. We had to:

dnscmd /config /enableEDnsProbes 0

Obvious really when you think about it!!!!!

It would have been more obvious, had you stated you were using Windows
Server 2003 or if you had posted this in the windows.server.dns group.

This is a known problem with Win2k3 behind a firewall.
