This is a question about removing the SP2 installer, not SP2 itself.

Can anyone help this person?
Here's their post:

"Well I made an attempt (using Add/Remove Programs) to uninstall the
downloaded (but not intalled) SP2 update. However, I aborted that
attempt when I got a warning message that some programs would not work
properly if I continued to remove SP2. There were a lot of programs in
that list, so I chose to cancel. I also went into System
Properties/Automatic Updates and changed my preference to "notify me but
don't automatically download or install them." Looks like I am stuck
with the SP2 in its downloaded but uninstalled state. That seems not to
have affected anything, but I really don't like to have it lurking in
the background like that. I wonder how many problems it would have
caused if I had chosen to install it the first time?

Another question: If it is truly not installed yet how come it shows up
in the Add/Remove Programs list? Any why whould there even be a problem
removing it if it wasn't yet installed?"

Thiers no uninstalling a program in add/remove that hasnt been installed yet.
Youre viewing something else,if SP2 installation files were downloaded from
microsoft and thier unopened on youre desktop then its not listed in
add/remove
programs. To chk this go to run, type:WinVer In the pop-up window SP2 would
be listed. You probably are looking at SP2 fixes before the SP was introduced.

Thanks for your response. It appears the person still has SP1, but
keeps getting annoyed by the installer asking to update whenever
they reboot. Do you have any advice on disabling that?

Here's their post:

"I did check on the version via run: WinVer
It shows that I have the following: Version 5.1 (Build
2600.xpsp2.030422-1633: Service Pack 1)

So It looks like Service Pack 2 has not been installed after all, and I
am just seeing the SP2 fixes. I think I may just understand this now,
but do they have a solution on how to get rid of the downloaded SP2
update? I have just been cancelling the installation because you have to
sign an agreement before you can install the SP2 update. I cancel at
that point, but the window keeps popping up every time I restart or
reboot my PC."

Hi

If SP2 have stared to download downloaded (or are ready to install),
and you want to get rid of the files without installing SP2, clean
out the Download folder (WU5's temporary download folder) located here:

%windir%\SoftwareDistribution\

(%windir% is typically C:\Windows)

To avoid that Windows Updates/Automatic Updates tries to install
SP2 at all (up to 12. April 2005):

Toolkit to Temporarily Block Delivery of Windows XP SP2 to a PC
Through Automatic Updates and Windows Update
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...BA-EA5D-4425-89C1-C1CB1CCD463C&displaylang=en

Run the XPSP2BlockerTools.exe in the link above. It will extract
several files to the folder you specify.

Then run XPSP2Blocker.exe to activate the blockage (it will create
the registry value described in the link above).

This will not block you from installing SP2 from e.g. the SP2 CD
later on...

Thank you for the link.
It sounds like just what we're looking for.
