Problem re-installing HP1220c

Hi...

I'm trying to reinstall my printers after a system teardown and
rebuild. Relatively fresh install of W2K, using a LinkSys 3-port
print server, I was able to get Port 1 working relatively easily with
my HP 5p Laser Jet, but getting the HP 1220c DeskJet is causing me
major havoc.

I have tried both Port 2 as well as Port 3 but can't get either to
work and print a test page. I'm even using the official certified
1220c drivers DL'd from HP's website tonight. I seem to be having a
bear of a time configuring the port. The printserver has it's own
designation like SCECDXXX and the printers normally when installed as
network printers are designated as SCECDXXX_P1 (or P2 or P3). When I
try to configure the Printserver to add a new Port for P2... it always
defaults to the right device name, but when I choose to select a
different device port like Parallel 2, then the port name for Printer
1 continues to come up and I can't edit it out. I'd like to delete
Port 1 and maybe try from scratch, but I can't delete Port 1 either.

I have new identical Belkin HD Bi-Directional cables on both printers,
and I can't figure out whether this is a LinkSys iisue or print driver
issue... or both. If anyone has some clue about what I should try,
let me know, OK? TIA!

Sounds more to me like a linksys issue.
If you can, reset the printserver to factory defaults and start the
config from scratch and see what happens

Dave...

I spent about 3 hours (2 last night 1 today) with LinkSys and we did
everything:

• Tried setting reset switch 5 seconds. LEDs indicate P1 & P2 are OK,
error on P3 (no cable).

• Removed LaserJet (cables) altogether from print server and shut it
off.

• Switched the cables so that P1 is now connected to the DeskJet (no
cable to LaserJet).

• Tried connecting directly to PC LPT1 and it printed test page
perfectly with no hesitation.

• Removed cable from LPT1, reconnected to P1 on Print Server, then
Reset TCP/IP port (I deleted old, added newTCP/IP with custom settings
per LinkSys support for LPR and P1) and still no printing.

• Got it to somehow print garbage at the top lines once or twice which
suggested that maybe it was the wrong driver?

• Tried LITE 1220C driver and nothing happens (its in the que, but no
printing). Maybe that's important? Shows up in the que, but no real
output to the printer?

• Print Que shows "Printing - Printer Busy or Error" under status
after spooling. Tried resetting the print server, no change.

I'm basically pulling my hair out because the Print Server works fine
on any port (P1-P2-P3) with the LaserJet, but will not print on any
port to the DeskJet. Either of my cables (both brand-new Belkin
bi-directional) will work with the LaserJet (Print server or LPT1) or
the DeskJet (LPT1 only). It smells of bad drivers, but other than
getting drivers from HP's website, I don't know what else to do. And
why would the printer print properly with the driver if connected to
the LPT1 but not with the Print Server?

See what I mean? Plus my original HP CD drivers (circa 2000) can't be
as good as the certified drivers currently on HP's web site... and I
don't even know if I can install them.
