Problem joining to winnt domain

When i tried to join win xp prof'l workstation to a winnt 4.0 server, i
recieved an error and prompt "a domain controller for the domain could not be
contacted."
 
You should be able to join XP Pro client to a Win NT 4 Domain without any
problems. A domain controller must exist for this to happen.

Otherwise they are islands of their own unless they happen to be using the
default Workgroup. In such a case, resources can still be shared but one
loses the benefit of central administration for example (one key benefit of
Domain vs. Workgroup).
 
thanks to all, actually i couldnt ping the PDC by name, so that i go directly
to host and lmhost and update it from the server, then i resolved the problem.

i was copied host and lmhost files from the PDC server(win nt), and paste it
to the win xp pro workstation with this path C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\DRIVERS\ETC.
Then, try to join again your win xp to win nt domain.
