Joining WinNT 4.0 Domain

Guest

Hi,

I have just got a Windows XP Pro notebook and am unable to join a WinNT 4.0
Domain. The message i got was: "Domain Controller for the domain is
uncontactable".

Could this be becos XP can't connect to WinNT or is it becos the WinNT
server wasn't setup correctly.

Appreciate if if someone out there could help. thank you in advance.

Anyone who has a NT4 Domain now and has NOT obtained an extended security release contract
with Microsoft is asking for trouble since MT4 is a DEAD OS and is no longer supported nor
updated, including security updates.

That being said, you would have to be on a LAN that communicates with the Domain Controller
(Use NBTSTAST -A to test) and then use a administrators account to join the Domain.

The first thing to do is use NBTSTAT to see if you can obtain NetBIOS information from the
Domain Controller's IP address. If you can't then you have to verify the IP Stack and
NetBIOS is enabled.

Firewall off? Can you ping the server by name and by IP address? Can you
ping the DHCP server? (if exists) If no DHCP is the laptop static IP on the
same subnet? Correct subnet mask, gateway, wins?
