I did the following mistake,

I tried to install windows 2003 server on my computer, with windows home
edition installed on the hard drive.
I instructed win 2003 setup to do an installation on other folder, \winnt\
but after restart I get the following error:

"Windows could not start because the following file is missing or corrupt:
<Windows Root>\system32\hal.dll
Please re-install a copy of the above file"

Any ideas how to resolve that? I tried to do what the message displays but
no progress.

Where to start? Usually, in such instances, a missing or corrupt Hal.dll
file (among others) is a result of the boot system not able to locate the
Windows location (kind of like it knows there is an installation - but
where). It is considered a no-no to install two instances of Windows on the
same partition. Not familiar with the interaction of Windows 2003 (server)
and XP - however in such installations involving XP both installations may
share, all or "parts", the program files and My documents folders - in
addition to possibility of conflicting registry values. Would suggest you
try a repair with XP CD.
