Problem Installing XP

This seems weird to me.

I inherited my brother's old Compaq Presario that was loaded with a
non-working WIndows ME.

I thought I would try to install on it a legal copy of XP Pro SP2 that
I am no longer using. I can't seem to do it for some reason.

Seems that after the install completes the first part and restarts as
it normally does, the danged machine insists in restarting from the CD
again! I have done installs enough to know that at this point the
restart should work from the HD and not the CD.

I have looked at the BIOS and although it allows me to set the boot
order (choosing FDD, HD, and CD), no change I make does any good.
I tried pulling the cd disk also. If I do the latter, or make the
boot order choose HD first, it tells me the boot device (HD probably)
is not bootable.

I must be missing something?

TIA

Yes I know. XP uses NTFS of course. No I am not sure. I only know
it won't continue install beyond the first part.

Is it possible that the XP needed for this Compaq is a different one?
Proprietary - OEM?

It is likely that the hardware is missing some drivers.

It is likely that the hardware is missing some drivers.

May be, but I looked at two driver download sites and only see drivers
for the modem, sound, and video. My failure is long before all that -
it happens in early stage of installation.

Perhaps the HD is the problem, bad MBR?

Suppose it is. How would I correct for it? What procedure can I try
in order to repair the Master Boot Record (MBR)?

Thanks
