problem installing XP - file copying failures

I am at my wits end with this one. I need to reinstall XP on a brand new pc
system, only the Recovery Console Setup program won't read certain files
from the XP Cd and Setup inevitably fails. It's the dreaded "Setup cannot
copy the file file_name. Press X to retry, Y to abort" error message. It
always seems to fail to copy the same files, some of them being:
processr.sys, amdk7.sys, amdk6.sys, mouclass.sys, tourP.exe, explorer.exe,
and many others. It fails to copy so many that Setup just can't continue.
Occasionally I get a STOP error along with it, like "Bad pool caller" or
something, but mostly I just get Setup failures.

I've been searching for info on this and I've ran through most of what MS
suggests on this issue(
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;310064), without
success. It's a brand new pc with a dvd/cd combo, and when I first got it I
installed XP on it without problems, using a 3-yr old copy of XP. Only NOW
it won't work. It won't even install using a perfect BACKUP copy of the damn
cd!Exactly the same errors.

So what I did was try installing XP again on an old pc -THIS pc, on an empty
partition - using the old Artec cdrw drive. It worked flawlessly. So is it
the bloody CD or not??? I am utterly confused and lost here. I've tried
everything. I didn't install any component myself, it was all pre-installed,
including the memory. I tried the WinDiag mem test and on the standard test
it seemed to fail all but 2 passes; in the extended tests it seemed to fail
ALL of them. I don't know how reliable or accurate these results are seeing
that I've been able to use this new pc without problems prior to this major
error, it's brand new DDR dual-channel memory. As for overclocking, I don't
even know what overclocking is. As far as I can tell, all CMOS and BIOS
settings are at default.

I need info on my DVD/CD combo drives, they're both by the TSScorp company,
but all I can get on them is some stupid technical translation company. The
motherboard is a Gigabtye GA-K8N-SLI, with chipset from Nvidia.

Cheers
Tim

If the CD works on another machine, it's likely a bad CD drive, bad hard
drive, or bad RAM.

I used a Samsung hard drive diagnostic tool on the hard drive and it passed
every test, so I think we can discount drive failure. I tried the XP CD in
both the DVD-R/RW drive and CD drive and they both failed to copy files. So
yea maybe it is a Cd drive failure..but I still need to be sure. After all,
I've been unable to play music CDs in some of my cd players, yet able to
play the same cd in others. Maybe the same thing's happening here. Besides
that all these components are brand new and I've been able to use the pc
before all this.

Brand new components do not assure that they are good components.
Try physically disconnecting each CD drive and try the install. I have seen
more than once a bad CD drive cause the other drive on the cable to not
function properly.
