Problem Installing Vista 5365 and 5381

Hi,

Currently, I am having some issue installing Vista 5365 and 5381 into my
system. My system is configured such that c:\ has no OS installed and is 2
GB, D:\ has XP installed and is 6GB, E: is for Vista and is 10GB.

I trigger the installation from winthin XP and choose the custom install
option. When I try to install Vista into E:\, everything proceed normally
till the "Copying
Windows Files" stage, where the system prompt that

"Setup was unable to locate a locally attached hard drive suitable for
holding temporary Setup files."

Can anyone tell me what might be causing this issue and how to resolve it? I
have no issue installing Vista 5308, 5344. Only 5365 onwards do the issue
surface. From some other post, someone suggested that Vista 5381 needs a
minimum of 15GB. Is this true?

Thanks for any help.

Correct, you need a minimum of 14.5 GBs for Vista to install and store
temporary files. I was in a similar situation and had to merge to existing
10 GB partitions. I believe the reason is it copies and expands temporary
files on the partition, so it needs a lot of space to do that since its
basically copying a preconfigured image of the OS to disk.

Hi Andre,

Thanks for the advise. I've managed to install Vista 5381 successfully after
changing the partition size to 15GB. Maybe the Vista installer can be more
explicit about the requirements. :)

Hi, KS.

Previous builds installed into 15 GB volumes for me. That is, I thought
they were 15 GB. I had told WinXP's Disk Management to make them 15000 MB.
Build 5381 x86 installed without complaint. But the x64 version of 5381
balked. When I stared at the screen long enough, I realized that it said it
needed 14.9 GB and my "15 GB" volume had only about 14.7 GB. Luckily, I had
plenty of unformatted space on that HD, so I used Shift+F10 to open a "DOS"
window and created a new 20 GB (20000 MB) volume. X64 happily installed
there.

In early builds, there was no number shown by Setup. Just "not enough
space", with no hint of how much space might be needed. We complained to MS
and this build is the first one where I've noticed that it actually
specifies how large the volume needs to be.

Note that there is also a requirement for space on the System Partition,
even if you are installing Vista onto a different volume. I don't recall
the number, but it is upwards of 1 GB - maybe 800 MB.
