I need to install IIS (Internet Information Services) in Windows XP Pro off
the original CD and to do this I need to run Add/Remove Windows Components in
Control Panel. I have SP 2 installed as well and have set up Windows to
install updates automatically.

The problem is that it gives me the option of components to install, but
when I select IIS it give me a multitude of "setup cannot copy the file
####.dll and ####.exe" error messages. This occurs for all the files required
to install IIS.

It won't install off the files located in the i386 file in the system files
on my harddrive, nor off the original disc.

I need to install IIS to run a specific program.

Any ideas?

Do you have any dependant services that is required to run ISS installed? Some things like Front Page Server extensions. Also what versions of the MSDE and MDAC is installed?

I have the following installed:

Microsoft SQL Server Management Studio Express 9.00.2047.00
Microsoft Data Access Components (MDAC) 2000.085.1117.00
(xpsp_sp2_rtm.040803-2158)
Microsoft MSXML 2.6 3.0 4.0 5.0 6.0
Microsoft Internet Explorer 7.0.5730.11
Microsoft .NET Framework 2.0.50727.42
Operating System 5.1.2600

At this point I do not have any services that are IIS dependent installed as
it will not allow me to install any until I install IIS.

I too have developed this exact same problem.. Tried CD, Harddrive, and safe
mode..
Where is Microsoft when you need a solution ... We need help!!! NOW...

Hi Jerry, Bona Fide, Peter Foldes.

I am joining this club too, I have exactly the same problem.

Jerry ... I tried your link but it fails for me. Can you recall what was on
it? Did it help? Do you have another link please ?

A thought occurred to me. Is it just a question of dropping the files into
WINDOWS and then running the procedure again? If nobody else has tried that
then I can do it and let you all know, but I don't want to take the risk if
it has been tried and failed.

Perhaps people can let me know.

Folks -- another member of the club. Having the exact same problem. Found
MS KB #894351. Went thru the instructions there and determined that I need to
create a merged XP Pro and XP Pro SP2 set of files (Method 2 described in the
KB article). Problem is that they only CD I have is XP Pro SP2. The question
now is how to get a copy of the now long out of date XP Pro CD to work the
solution that MS offers. Does anyone have a suggestion on how to get
unstuck from this problem??

cheers,
BillW
