Problem Installing HP 697c Printer

When XP SP2 detects the printer on lpt1 and installs software,
it tells me an error occurred and a needed file could not be found.
It does not tell me which file.
As a result any and all files spool but don't print.
Computer is a Dell Optiplex GX1.
Can anyone help?
