hi all,

I am trying to connect my windows 2000 desktop and ibm thinkpad r52
(windows XP) directly via a straight cable. The configuration i am
giving to desktop is

IP --> 192.168.1.1
Subnet --> 255.255.255.0
Gateway --> 192.168.1.1

The configuration on laptop is

IP --> 192.168.1.2
Subnet --> 255.255.255.0
Gateway --> 192.168.1.1

I am able to ping from laptop to desktop but not the reverse way. Both
the computers are assigned same workgroup but still not able to
connect.

Pls help

You need a crossover cable but some new NIC's will auto switch. Is the LED
on for both NIC's? It might just work if you don't assign IP and Leave
default settings.

You would do better getting a $10 router (airlink101.com). The router acts
as a gateway and DHCP server to assign IP address. You can configure ICS,
Internet Connection Sharing, to act like router on one computer that will be
gateway and assign IP to other.
