Problem editing boot.ini in Recovery mode

Hello,
In needing to reinstall Win XP Pro, I reduced the partitions to one and so
couldn't boot up into Windows and apparently need to edit the boot.ini file
to reflect the number of partitions now.
I booted Win xp from cd and got into the Recovery mode(I'm new to this) and
trying to use b elieve is the bootcfg command set-the Edit command-to edit
the file but apparently the edit command is not present or working.
Any ideas how to fix the boot.ini file? Should I just use the Rebuild
command of bootcfg and just rebuild the whole think, and anything I need to
keep in mind in doing that?
Thanks, God bless
Van
