Problem copying files on setup

I have a P4 2.4ghz computer with a new 80GB HD that I am trying to install a
retail upgrade of XP home on. After I get past the initial part, drivers
etc, asking for previous version CD (Win 98 for me), formatting, it goes to
copying the setup files. At this time, it gets hung up on numerous different
files. It says something like there is problem with this file or you don't
have the OEM CD in. The options are hit enter for retry, escape to skip, or
F3 to quit. I have tried this on my archaic CDROM drive and a newer Lite On
CDRW drive. In both cases, it gets hung up. Some files will load after
hitting enter a bunch of times, others will not.

Ideas?
Thx.

That is my current setup. Nothing hooked up that isn't absolutely necesary.
I only have 128MB of PC133mhz RAM, could that have an effect? If not, what
else can I do.

Thanks.

I will give that a try then. My only backup is 128 MB of slower PC100 RAM.
:( Better than nothing I guess.

Thanks for the info.

128 mb is sufficient for installing and running XP but I suggest a lot more
if you run apps like Office and graphics intensive programs. With 128mb ram
XP is going to keep your hard drive very busy paging (swap file).

Well, I changed memory slots, not the actual memory yet, and disabled the
BIOS memory caching, and the install went further, about 65%. Then I get the
BLUE SCREEN with Stop 0x000000C5. The only thing I can find related to this
error message has to do with Win 2000.

I just never thought installing a retail upgrade on a new, blank HD would be
this hard/annoying. Haven't MS yet, but I just might have to. :(
