problem causing WD to stop?

Everytime i start up my computer, a messge comes up that says that a problem
caused windows defender to stop. It says to search how to start a program
manually, but i don't really know how to do that and I don't think it would
work anyway. My windows defender is not working, and hasn't been for a
while. Do I need to upgrade? I just didn't think it would say that it
couldn't run because of a problem just because I needed to upgrade. Help
please!

If you are using Windows 2K, then uninstall Windows Defender. If you are
using Vista, just post some history like upgrade from or fresh install.
Indicate if you have Windows One Care installed. If you are a Windows XP SP2
user, then uninstall Windows Defender and install from the following location:
