Problem Caused by Updates?

I have the Automatic Updates turned on on my wife's computer. Last
Friday, August 12, 2006, some updates came down (don't know which ones)
which required a reboot.

After the reboot, Internet Explorer would not work properly. When you
opened IE, all you got was a blank page. No home page, no msn page, no
nothing. Not even a 404 page. Just a plain white screen where the
page should go. (Toolbars, etc. were there, though). If you tried to
type in a URL and hit go. It just sat there. The internet connection
was still working as far as I could tell. No application software has
been installed recently, and the machine is virus and spyware free, as
best I can tell.

So after fighting with it for a while, I decided to do a system
restore, and move back to the previous configuration. But when I
started System Restore, the program would not open. I could see in the
Task Manager that the rstrui.exe process was running, but I had no
program dialog. Also, when I tried to go into Control Panel/Add Remove
programs, sure enough, it wouldn't let me run it. Could see the
process, but no interface.

In exasperation, I ended up rerunning the installation program from the
original CD, then selecting Repair. At that point, everything was
working.

But when I ran the updates (all 52 of them), the original problem
reappeared. I did another reinstall/repair, and that is where it is
right now.

I know this one may be difficult to track down, since I do not know
which update is causing the problem, but I'm wondering if anyone else
has had a similar problem recently. Also, where can I get a list of
updates and the order in which they were released?

Thanks, in advanced.

Yes, I had the same problem ... it turned out to be invalid:

c:\windows\system32\shdocvw.dll
c:\windows\system32\mshtml.dll

Somehow old versions were installed.

You may also see that Add/Remove does display anything either.
Check the dates on shdocvw.dll. Should be at least 8/4/2004.

First try re-registering shdocvw.dll (regsvr32
c:\windows\system32\shdocvw.dll).

To keep track of things, it helps immensely if you include all of previous
message(s) in your replies to the newsgroup. Thank you.
