Problem burning cds

Hi,

I recently bought a new pc and had my old cd-writer
installed on it (TEAC-516EB) by the store that I bought
the PC from. I then installed Nero 6. When I try to
burn, the program freezes up, the cd is stuck in the
drive and I have to use a paperclip to get it out and
then click on the reset button since it is the only way
to make the pc shutdown. So then I tried burning with
Roxio media creator 7 and the same thing happens. I fully
uninstalled Nero but again, no go. What puzzles me is
that the native Winxp program works and burns the cd. I
have udma on, and have tried to enable and disable IMAPI
but it made no difference. The drive does read all cds
however.

Could it be a problem with the TEAC drive or is there
something that I am not doing right? The TEAC in the
bios is a slave to my DVD player.

I would like to be able to burn with either Roxio or Nero
and any help would be greatly appreciated.

Try to ask Roxio or Nero what the problem is. Since
Windows XP burn CD's, there is no problem with your
hardware.
I suspect a compatibility problem with Roxio or Nero

Thanks for the quick reply. I did write to Roxio. They
told me to uninstall all of the Nero applications, and
registry entries, which I did and tried before writing my
first message. Unfortunately, even with all of Nero
uninstalled, the cd burner still freezes up when I use
Roxio.

Haha, that is grand. Roxio blames it on Nero. Problem is that Nero uses
its own ASPI (Roxio uses a different one than Nero) and shouldn't
conflict with Roxio no matter what.

First off, you are going to want the mode set to DMA 2. Second,
uninstall Roxio and reinstall Nero. Nero is a much better program even
if Roxio is more aesthetically pleasing. Third, try updating Nero (or
reinstall) to the latest version here:

Finally, if all else fails, try downloading this and using it in the
options section of Nero where you can choose the ASPI:

Do make sure that Nero is using its own ASPI first (in the options).

This problem may be fixed easily. Just make sure that the motherboard
chipset drivers are correctly installed, so that the UltraDMA IDE drivers
get installed.

Interesting to read these posts. I have a TEAC CD516EB too and that has given problems following an upgrade from WinME to WinXP. Under WinME it would burn CD-Rs and write CD-RWs without a problem. Once upgraded to WinXP I could not burn CD-Rs but could write CD-RWs - very strange. I had not changed my CD-R brand either.

I tried all fixes suggested by Nero and TEAC - no change. The Burn process would create the image on the hard drive OK and would start the burn process but always hang at about 5% (lead in). The only option was then to reboot the PC!!

The PC is about 3 years old using a Jetway 994AN-L motherboard. Everything else under WinXP seems fine. I upgraded the TEAC firmware but still no luck with burning. Also tried the TEAC in another PC running WinXP and it burns fine - so the TEAC is OK.

In the end (having tried every suggestion with no change) I simply dropped the CD-R burn speed from 16x to 12x and it worked fine! Seems that the combination of my motherboard and WinXP don't like this drive at full (16x) speed but is OK at 12x.

I have since swapped the drive out and replaced with a Lite-On 52x unit which burns at a full 52x! So the option is to either live with a 12x burn or swap the drive to one that XP / your PC is happier with.

The other possibility is that your first CD Burner was stuck in PIO mode
instead of DMA Mode and was unable to push through the data required to
write at 16x. Upgrades from one OS to another are usually very tricky
and often leave problems. This is why I always do a clean install of XP
instead of upgrading.
