Problem After Updating XP

R

Robert Walker

Today I went to the Windows Update site and scanned for
the latest updates. There was 1 critical - the latest MS
security fix for IE6 and 1 suggested driver update - a
modem driver update.

Both files downloaded and installed. When I re-booted and
tried to go back on-line, all of the dial-up information
was gone and I had to re-enter all of the dialing
properties. Then when it did connect, the speed was only
28.8 instead of the normal 45+.

I decided that the modem driver was a mistake and I went
into the control panel and went to the modem driver and
requested to roll the driver back to the previous.

After that, it said that I needed to re-boot. The PC
started up, Windows XP started to load and never finished
and the machine re-booted itself. On the next boot-up
attempt, scandisk was automatically started because of the
disorderly shutdown.

The first scandisk noted problems in the
\system volume information\restore directory.

Each start-up attempt, the PC gets as far as saying
Windows is loading and shows the blue Welcome screen. At
that point, it re-boots and the process starts again.

The process continued for several times, each time there
were more errors and cross-linked files discovered by
scandisk.

Windows XP has never succesfully reloaded. Is there a way
to get it into safe mode? It hasn't given me that as an
option.

The restore disks packed with my PC want to do a complete
re-format and system OS restore. I would like to avoid
that if possible.

My PC is a Systemax with a 1.8 G Hz P4 processor and 768
Mb of Ram. I've kept up with all of the critical Windows
XP updates.

Any suggestions?

This is the gentlemen who helped me. You have to go
through about 2 or 3 people who don't have a clue, but
after that they will pass you on to tech support. Be
patient. There is an article that also describes the
procedure as well. It can be access from another
computer that works. I don't know what is wrong with the
SP1 download, but it crashed my system the same way.

Good luck!!

Trying going into safe mode. Turn on your PC and before
it starts loading XP, hit F8 a bunch of times until you
get a menu option screen. Choose to boot into safe mode.
See if you have a system restore point saved before the
driver updates were done. Or you could go into the device
properties, delete the modem entirely reboot and let
windows try and identify it again. I would try the system
restore point first. It's under the Accessories > System
Tools > System Restore. Good luck.
