Today I went to the Windows Update site and scanned for
the latest updates. There was 1 critical - the latest MS
security fix for IE6 and 1 suggested driver update - a
modem driver update.
Both files downloaded and installed. When I re-booted and
tried to go back on-line, all of the dial-up information
was gone and I had to re-enter all of the dialing
properties. Then when it did connect, the speed was only
28.8 instead of the normal 45+.
I decided that the modem driver was a mistake and I went
into the control panel and went to the modem driver and
requested to roll the driver back to the previous.
After that, it said that I needed to re-boot. The PC
started up, Windows XP started to load and never finished
and the machine re-booted itself. On the next boot-up
attempt, scandisk was automatically started because of the
disorderly shutdown.
The first scandisk noted problems in the
\system volume information\restore directory.
Each start-up attempt, the PC gets as far as saying
Windows is loading and shows the blue Welcome screen. At
that point, it re-boots and the process starts again.
The process continued for several times, each time there
were more errors and cross-linked files discovered by
scandisk.
Windows XP has never succesfully reloaded. Is there a way
to get it into safe mode? It hasn't given me that as an
option.
The restore disks packed with my PC want to do a complete
re-format and system OS restore. I would like to avoid
that if possible.
My PC is a Systemax with a 1.8 G Hz P4 processor and 768
Mb of Ram. I've kept up with all of the critical Windows
XP updates.
Any suggestions?
