Problem advancing slides in a series with 1 music file

P

Piet Paaltjes

Hello,

We made a presentation (powerpoint 2007) with multiple slides and
multiple sound-files (mp3).

I want to use 1 song for 3 slides.
For the sound-file I selected:
start playing: from beginning
stop playing: after 3 slides.
For slide advancing: When I select <mouseclick>, it works fine.
Now, I would like to change the presentation in such a way that no
longer user-interference (mouse-clicks to advance slides) is
necessary.
When I select (for the first slide of the series of 3) advance slide:
after 30s; the slide-transition is not made 30s after the start of
that first slide.
Maybe (I did not check this) the transition is made after the music
stops playing?

Is what I try to achieve possible?
And if so, what is wrong I my setup?

Thanks.

Hi

Do you have any animations on the first slide? If so, check none of them are
set to 'after previous' as they will wait until the sound file has finished
to take their turn. The easiest way to see if that is happening is to have a
look at the advanced timeline - click on down arrow next to an animation and
select show advanced timeline.

There are many animations on the first slide too.
All are photo's that come into the slide using various animations and
timings (synchronised with the music). Some also disappear with
various types of animations.
The intention is that they follow each other with a certain timing.
The sound file is the first item in the list of Custom Animations. It
is set to start with previous.
The first photo is also set to start with previous. All subsequent
photo's are set to start after previous.
(I also use the advanced timeline to check the timing.)

It works fine.
But ...
When I had to change some of the music-files (conversion of WMA to
MP3) I had to remove the first item in the custom animation list;
because off the different link (change of filename).
When I try to rebuild the slide again, I'm not successfull.
This is what I do:
1. Insert a new slide after the original slide.
2. First add the soundfile via Insert -> Sound from file (don't know
exact names). Play automatic. Start with previous.
3. Go to the original (=previous) slide and from the Selection Window
I collect all photo's (select them in the order in which they have to
appear on the slide, while pressing CTRL-key). Copy them and paste
them in the new slide.
In doing so, all photo's keep their position, their correct order,
correct timing (with 1 exception; see below) and the corresponding
animation-effects.
Unfortunately 1 item goes wrong.
The first photo starts with the start of the slide and the music also
starts with the start of the slide (both are defined as: start with
previous). This is as was intended.
But the problem starts with the second photo. It is set to start:
after previous. In the original slide it starts (with the correct
timing) right after the first photo (so does not wait until the music
stops playing), but in my newly made slide it does wait until the
music stops playing.
This (unwanted) timing is also shown by the advanced timeline.

I read your advise. Do not use : Start after previous!
But the timing is rather complicated with, on average 10 photo's per
slide and 15 slides in total. And I did not make the presentation
myself. It will cost a lot of time to rearrange everything.
(Or is there an easy way to do so?)
Besides, it works fine for the original slides.
So, I expect that I just have to change some (more) setting(s) to
repair everything.
Does anybody know what is wrong?

I have found he item causing the problem.
It seems that when you insert a sound from file (and let it start
automatically), the default value for stop playing is: on click.
After changing it to: after 1 (or 2 or 3) slides (whatever was
appropriate), I got what I wanted (photo 2 immediately after photo 1
and the sound file keeps on playing).

See above.
