Hey. Recently Windows became corrupted and I couldn't find the original
installation disc, so I got another one and installed it on a second hard
drive. Now I can't access my old data on the original hard drive (I had a
backup folder on the desktop, so the data's in Documents and
Settings/Jack/Desktop/Backup). I know it has something to do with permissions
since I'm using a different copy of XP, and an article I found in the
knowledge base showed how to modify the permissions from Safe Mode, but I can
only modify and acess the "Jack" folder, not "Desktop." I get still get the
error saying "...\Desktop is not accessible. Access is denied." everytime I
try to acess it. I tried to repair the orignial installation, too, but the
new copy of XP won't reconize it. I'm at the end of my rope, does anybody
have any ideas? Any help at all would be massivly appreciated. Thanks!

Go back into \Documents and Settings and right click the Jack folder.
Select Properties and go to the Security tab. Click the Advanced button
then remove the check from 'Inherit from parent the permissions...' and
put a check in 'Replace permission entries on...' Now click the Owner
tab. Select your current user account and put a check in the box
'Replace owner on subcontainers and objects', Apply it, OK it.

Now back at the Security tab make sure your current user account is
listed, if not add it. Give yourself at least List Folder Contents and
Read access before clicking Apply, then OK. You should now be able to
access any folders within your old User Profile.

there is no "Use simple file sharing (Recommended)" in the Advanced Settings.
Also there is no Security tab under properties.
