Having adjusted my CMOS settings on My Win XP2 machine, I now have a
CMOS prompt on boot up I want to lose;ie Do I want to make HDD back up.

I had wrongly selected when last in CMOS.

However when I access CMOS now at boot up, by holding "del" key I
eneter CMOS but the arrow keys on keyboard don't work.
I have tried alternative keyboard, which lights up when boot starts so
is powered.

Any suggestions valued.

Since BIOS settings are not standard between manufacturers, contact the
hardware mfr. for assistance with getting in - or, if that's not possible,
provide information about your motherboard/system and see if someone else
has more information.

Install Y/N
Not Install Y/N

Since we really don't know what you did (except that it was something
inadvisable), put your BIOS back to default settings. Do this by either
moving a jumper on the motherboard and/or by removing the battery for
some period of time (a few hours may do it; sometimes it takes over
night). Refer to your motherboard manual for the exact instructions.

I suggest open the case of your PC and remove the backup battery for few
seconds. then put it back, screw back the case and boot up the system.
Your default bios should load up and everything will work again.

You can then change the settngs again and making sure you save it before
existing by pressing F10.

As Malke imstated, since you won't respond to suggestion, reset cmos settings
per his directions.

If that doesn't do it, Sure, have fun, reinstall.
If that's all the help you're going to give us when we're trying to help
you solve your problem.

sure delete it all!!

good chance it isn't the problem.

Thanks all for tips.
Battery removal seems best; assume this is small circular 3v battery;
incidentally are these rechargeable?

The boot up screen is very fast so I can't read something that appears
in bold text, and 1st screen that stops [if I don't opt into CMOS]
is the hard drive back up option[that I'd opted for yesterday when in
CMOS,
and could navigate], and on this screen the keyboard arrows still work
as they do when XP boots.

The reason I'm reluctant now to accept the Hard Drive Back Up, by
partitioning the drive
is that at end of info screen is that there's a warning right at end
regards FAT16/32
files and some mention of the dreaded FDISK.

If I accepted I'm concerned at data loss; if I did the annoying pop up
screen
would not reappear apparently.

Thanks again.

It appears that you aren't real familar with computers.

The battery isn't rechargeable. Will last a long time.

You can stop the screen by pressing "Pause/Break" key. Hit spacebar to
release.
The boot up screen is very fast so I can't ......

I thought you can't get into CMOS?
if I don't opt into CMOS.......

If you can get into CMOS, there is no reason to mess with the battery!!!

Have never seen any BIOS that has this feature!!!
1st screen that stops is the hard drive back up option[that I'd opted for
yesterday when in CMOS

Have no idea what your talking about here!!

I think you would be better off having someone else with more experience fix
your computer!!!

What is make and model??

What exactly are you trying to do? Do you want to install a new
Operating System? Tell us exactly what you are trying to do so that we
can advice you your best option.

When you remove that 3v battery, you lose all your bios settings and the
date will revert to 1980! So you will need to reset all the settings
including HD types etc.

You have been warned!!

Thanks;
well I have removed the Battery for 40 minutes, but on rebooting the
time/date in sys tray didnt need revising; possibly as I have a START
UP programme "Clock Align.exe" that did the necessary.

However now have the start up screen paused and the highlighted text is
"Trend Chipaway Virus On Guard V1.64".

{When I could naviagate in CMOS, and having read various articles on
viruses of late it seemed to make sense to enable this.}

Booting Up offers me "F1{I think}" to continue or "DEL" to enter Set
Up;
entering continue I then get the Screen headed
"HDD Instant Recovery Utility~ www.lenten.com"

And option of Install/Not Install; if you then choose not to, XP boots
normally;
itys this pop up I wanted to now prevent.

Unfortunately same problem remains in that if I enter Set Up
into CMOS settings, I can't navigate as the arrow keys do not function,
in fact none of keyboard keys do.

PC is a UK make {Novatech} with AMD Athlon 1600 Mhz;
Bios = "Award Modular BIOS v6.00 PGN".

The reason I wondered if battery was Rechargeable/taking some form of
charge is the
fact that these CR2032 button cells have a 10 Year life apparently
& that seemed an amazing shelf life.

This is not a Windows XP issue.

It's a computer MFG or Award BIOS issue.

Award BIOS (it's now Phoenix)
BIOS or Core System Software Customers (CSS)
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you are a BIOS/CSS end user, please contact your PC manufacturer for
support. End users are defined as individuals who did not purchase the
BIOS/CSS product directly from Phoenix Technologies. Instead, a PC was
purchased with the firmware pre-loaded from a PC manufacturer. In this
instance the end user should contact their PC manufacturer for support, not
Phoenix Technologies
