Proble with HDD

Hi

I have a Western Digital HDD (WD800JB) that works fine in one PC but when I
try to make it a slave on another pc it simply keeps rebooting. It has two
partitions - one with Wndows XP and the other just with data. I want to wipe
the windows partition but keep the data (mainly mp3s).

The new pc has an ASUS A7N8X-X motherboard with AMD Athlon 1.09GHz and
1.25GHz of RAM.

Even if I try to install it as the master it wont work.

When its installed as a slave in the pc that just keeps booting, does the
bios of that machine see the drive as a slave? Are you sure of the jumper
settings?

Yes I did have a problem getting the jumpers and cable right but the BIOS now picks it up fine. I get a very brief "Blues screen of death" then it reboots. As I said even if I set it as master it still wont work. I busily coping over all the files via my network but the original plan was to leave all the files on the WD drive and just install it as a slave. I think it might be a motherboard issue.

What is the manufacturer of the HD that is master, while the WD HD is the
slave?

If you set it as master IN A DIFFERENT (mobo) MACHINE that is was taken from
(and no other disk connected) XP will not work, as "all" system drivers are
wrong. That's what the BSOD is...

No surprise. There's nothing wrong with the HD, it's just loading
stuff incompatible with the new motherboard.

Try a safe mode boot.

Won't boot up even in safe mode.

First, make sure that the WD hard drive is properly jumpered
as a Slave drive and that the original HD in the computer is
set as Master. Also, check the cable connecting the Master and
Slave drives is not for CSEL (cable select) and, just in case,
connect the end connector (Master) to the Master HD and the
center connector (Slave) to the WD drive.

Once set up properly, the computer should boot from its own HD.
The Windows partition in the WD drive (slave) can be deleted by
formatting it. But make sure that this is what is really being
deleted, that is Drive D or a different drive letter but never
Drive C.

Hi Thanks but I've already done all that. BIOS picks up both drive correctly but it just keeps rebooting everytime. I am copying the data from the WD to the Maxtor and could reformat the WD drive.

The probable reason why the computer is constantly rebooting is
that the bios is seeing 2 different HD's, each with a primary,
active partition. If possible in bios setup, remove the WD drive
from the boot sequence. Also, my technique for doing this type of
operation is to use an external USB HD enclosure or an USB/Firewire
HD dock.

As far as I could tell I have removed the slave from the boot sequence but its worth a check. I know that its set to boot from the master first.

Noted in thread to your post in alt.comp.periphs.mainboard.asus
that there was a reply that mentioned Cable Select. As posted by
GHalleck but not answered, are you sure that the 2 drives are
attached to either a 40-conductor or 80-conductor IDE cable and
not a CSEL cable? If latter, very important that HD jumpering
matches connector position on the cable...try to avoid, if possible.

That is the problem. Maxtor and WD drives, most, don't get along well in
the same PC. You're going to have to dump one for the PC to work
effectively. Or, put the Maxtor in an external enclosure for USB/Firewire.

Sorry to interrupt,

I allso have a ASUS main board.
The bios allows me to select what harddisk is first and second, regardless
of jumpersettings, as long as both disks are recognized..

Further, it then allows to choose the boot-order for three devices.

So, I suggest to check that in bios-setup, select the disc with the
functional WIN as first and than as boot device.

Should work.

Did for mee.

Succes
