printscreen file types in XP

I think you know that any image taken with the print screen function is
placed in the clipboard memory. That image can be pasted into any new image
format.
You are probably using Paint, which defaults to saving as a bitmap. Using a
more powerful graphics editor would expand the number of filetypes you could
'save as', (although I think you will find that even Paint can 'save as' a
..jpg.)

Thanks for the info...I think I was a little unclear.

If I paste the screenshot into an Outlook outgoing email, I have found that
my small exchange server is clogged up storage-wise. I was hoping to find a
way to limit the file type to a smaller file size .jpg instead of the
gigantic .bmp file formats. I like to keep recent email on the server for a
short time...thanks

No, you were clear enough. The default behavior for Windows is the bitmap. To
alter that you need a third party app. Windows has no setting to change the
bitmap to something else in the clipboard.
