Printing to XP from Win98

Attempting to print from a Win98 PC over a network (1 router, 2 PCs connected
to it) to a printer attached locally to a Win98 PC. Can see the printer just
fine over the network but when I attempt to add the printer as a network
printer on Win98, get prompted for a password. Tried the XP PC's
administrator user account's password (it's the only account on the XP PC)
but still get password invalid on Win98. Also tried using the password I use
for logging-on to Win98, did not work. There are no other passwords. Can
anybody help ?

Zach,

Is the XP computer running XP Home or Pro? If Pro, is it using Simple or
Classical File Sharing? If Classical, is it using Guest or non-Guest
authentication? Is the Guest account, or a non-Guest account, properly
activated for network access?

Huh? What does XP have to do with it? You are printing from a W9x PC to
another W9x PC.

When you shared the printer from the W9x PC to which it is attached, you may
have associated a password with that shared printer -- that is the PW you
must supply when connecting from the other W9x PC.

Bob,

My apologies for the confusion....."printer attached locally to a Win98 PC"
should have been "printer attached locally to a Win/XP PC"....Thx

- In original msg., "attached locally to a Win98 PC" should have been
"attached locally to a Win/XP PC"...sorry
- Running XP/Pro
- Using simple file sharing
- The guest account is enabled, i.e., "Account Disabled" is not checked
under security options for Guest but I don't see a way for specifying a
password specific to the Guest account. Still getting request for password
for Resource "\\IBMT42\IPC$". The IBMT42 is the "Computer Name" of the XP PC.

Thanks

If you're in Computer Management, and right click on an account, one of the
options should be "Set Password". If you set the password to null (put the
cursor in the box and hit the backspace to clear it), then when you try to
connect thru the network, the Guest account should be used and no password
requested. If the account is enabled.

Chuck,

I tried setting the Guest acct pswd but that did not work either, still
getting the original msg that the pswd is invalid. Here is something
interesting though.

I have a 3rd XP/Pro PC on the same network and until this point when I would
try to add a printer on this one, which is locally attached to the other
XP/Pro PC, I would get prompted for a user ID AND a pswd., I would use the
user ID and pswd of an acct with Administrator privileges and it would work
(I am never prompted for a user ID from the Win 98 PC, just a pswd). After
enabling the Guest acct and reseting its pswd, I could no longer add a
printer from the other XP/Pro PC either. The Guest acct does not seem to be
working so I disabled it and I am back to normal with my XP/Pro-to-XP/Pro
"Add Printer" but I still have the original problem when attempting it from
my Win98 PC. Please let me know if you have any other thoughts, otherwise
thx.

Zach,

Please read about combining Windows XP and legacy operating systems, maybe there
is a detail in there that didn't occur to you. Maybe the Microsoft white paper
will help.
