I deleted the network shortcuts on the laptop. I ran network setup again on
the laptop. It requires me to enter a user account and password to access
the primary (xp) computer. Since the user account requires a password, I
assume this is normal. I have other user accounts on it that do not require
a password. I have not tried to access those from the laptop.
The laptop can access the primary computer shared folders and the W98
computer. The primary computer can access the "My documents" folders on the
laptop and the shared folders on the W98 computer. The W98 computer can not
access shared folders on the primary computer.
The w98 computer can access the "my documents" folders on the laptop. But
it continues to ask for a password to access the primary (xp) computer. The
message is as follows:
"Enter network password" "Resource \\downstairs\IPC$"
"Downstairs" is the new name for the primary computer. But as I mentioned,
even before I assigned that name, I have not been able to access the primary
computer from the w98 computer since installing the laptop.
Additional information:
The primary computer has Norton security installed including the Norton
firewall. It is set up to allow home networking. The Windows firewall is
turned off.
The laptop has McAfee antivirus with no additional firewall other than the
windows firewall. The Windows firewall is turned on.
The W98 computer is running Trend PcCillin antivirus. No other firewall.
I am connected via a Linksys hardwire router.
Any advice? Thanks for you attention.
Dennis
One more thing. Both xp computers are running Home edition.
Thanks for the details, Dennis.
I'm sorry, but I misunderstood your first message. Now I see that
it's the primary computer that can't be accessed, not the laptop.
Run the Network Setup Wizard on the primary computer. Don't run the
Wizard again on the other computers, even if it tells you to.
If that doesn't solve the problem, follow these steps on the primary
computer:
1. Open a command prompt window (Start | Run | Cmd) and enter this
command:
net user guest /active:yes
2. Remove any password from the "Guest" account:
a. Click Start | Run.
b. Type "control userpasswords2" in the box and click OK.
c. Under "Users for this computer", click Guest.
d. Click Reset Password, don't enter a password, and click OK.
