My first tip: patience

Verify the XP COM configuration is set the same as the printer. The defaults
are set
for modems. The baudrate and handshake are the critical ones but they all
have to match. There is no Plug and Play detection over the serial port for
printers.

If you have a 25 to 9 pin converter make sure it is not one designed for a
mouse. Mouse converters are not pinned correctly for printers.

Let me know how this goes. It's a pain to setup unless you already have
all the right cables. If you repost with a question let me know what
printer you have.
