Printing Remote Downlevel Documents?

D

DJS

We find that when people print to the network printers, the documents show
up in printing logs with the name 'Remote Downlevel Document' instead of the
actual filenames of the documents being printed. It's not a virus (I know
the bugbear used to do this).

We're using a Win2K network server with XP Pro clients, a Win2K print server
and HP laserjets.

Has anyone had this problem before and know a good solution? It's much
easier to trace any particular printing abuses when we have the filenames.

Thanks

if the client printers are not true connections, then the jobs will come in
this format. If all the systems are on workgroup and the printers were
added on the client when the explorer ran what's called netcrawler, then the
printers are setup as local printers using a Local Port which has the name
\\printserver\printshare. These printers usually have AUTO in the printer
name. One can also perform the Local Port creation and add the printers on
the client manually or with a script.
