printing in red instead of black

For some reason our printer doesn't recognize the black
cartridge and uses the color cartridge. We tried to take
the color cartridge out to see if the printer was going
to use the black one, but the printer's red light went on
as if there were no ink.

We don't know what to do.

Both cartridges must be installed and have ink in them for the print to
print. Sounds like your black cartridge is empty. Some color ink is also
used in printing black to make it 'more' black.
