printing closes program

Trying to help a friend on this one. He's running XP and
whenever he tries to print, instead of printing, it
closes the program. Does it to all programs. Notepad,
Word, IE, etc. It just closes the program instead of
printing. No error msgs and no info in the events viewer
pertaining to the printer or print process.
He's using an Espon Stylus Color 440. Already removed and
re-installed it. Has latest drivers. Has all XP updates.
Printer shows as Ready in Epson status moniter. Virus
scan comes up clean.
Any ideas would be appreciated.
