After printing to a file (*.prn) windows xp does not know
how to open or print the file.

You can print it from the command line to a shared printer using this
command:

copy file.prn \\servername\printersharename

If you want a windows tool for doing it we have an inexpensive product
called FRP on our web site which will help.
