Printing a Booklet

J

JD

I followed the instructions from Suzanne's article for creating an
eight-page booklet.
I get one column printed, but can't figure out how to feed the paper back
into the printer.
Either the "odd pages" are superimposed on "even pages" or, if they print in
the opposite column, they are "upside down."
There must be something that I'm just not seeing.
This is an HP printer. The paper loads from the bottom and rolls over as it
is pulled through the printer.

Looking through Word Help, I ran across this. It's amazingly simple and
worked like a charm the first time. The real eye-opener was the "duplex"
feature.
"Print a Folded Booklet
When you select Book fold for your page setup, Microsoft Word prints two
pages on one side of the paper. When you fold the paper, it opens like a
book. This option is intended for documents that have more than two pages.
When you create a booklet, it's best to start with a new, blank document so
that you have better control over the placement of text, graphics, and other
elements. You can add a book fold to an existing document, but you may have
to reposition some elements once the book fold is in place.
Start a new, blank document.
On the File menu, click Page Setup, and then click the Margins tab.
In the Multiple Pages list, select Book fold.
If your document is not set to landscape orientation, Microsoft Word sets it
to landscape.
In the Inside and Outside boxes, type or select the amount of space you want
for the inside and outside margins. If you need even more space along the
fold to accommodate binding, type or select the amount of space you want in
the Gutter box.
In the Sheets per booklet list, select the number of pages you want to
include in a single booklet.
If the number of pages in the document exceeds the number of pages you
select for a booklet, Word prints the document as multiple booklets.
Select any other options you want in the Page Setup dialog box.
On the File menu, click Print.
Set options for printing on both sides of the paper.
If you aren't using a duplex printer:
In the Print dialog box, select the Manual duplex check box. Word will print
all of the pages that appear on one side of the paper, and then prompt you
to turn the stack over and feed the pages again.
Select the page range you want to print.
If you click Current page or Pages, Word prints the page you indicate, plus
the three other pages that belong on the same sheet of paper.
If you click Selection, Word prints your selection using the default page
layout instead of booklet layout."

My article does point out that Word 2002 and above have a built-in booklet
feature. It has its problems but obviously is working for you. What you seem
to have missed in using my method was the necessity to use "Mirror margins"
to alternate sides of the page. If you do that correctly, then your odd
pages print on the right half of the page and the even pages on the left. So
you print all the odd pages first, then the even, thus filling all the pages
with no overlap.

I did, indeed, miss the "mirror margins" feature. I'm going to try that
again.
When you say "feed the paper the same way," I assume you mean just flip it
over. That was what was giving me fits.
Thanks again.

Whether you flip it over or not depends on the printer. In general, you feed
it the exact same way you did the first time.

I finally got it. Worked perfectly. Thank you so much.
The Program looks great, by the way!

Glad you got it working! Someday perhaps I'll redo that article with some
helpful screen shots!

I don't know how you did it, but I've tried for three days to print a booklet. I changed computers a month ago, and the old Word 2000 had a very simple option on the print page for printing any document into a booklet. Word 2002 has a different print option page, and no matter what configuration I try, I cannot print a booklet from one of my old files. Since the document is over 20 pages long of complicated tables, I don't want to retype into a new document. I tried copying into a new document, but since the page is already in landscape orientation, it cuts the right half of the document off. Any ideas?
