Printer Sharing

I have a home network consisting of three computers. Two of the
computers have Win XP with SP2. The third has Win 98SE. I have a HP
OfficeJet 4110 hooked up to my main computer (with WinXP). I am having
great difficulty getting the other two computers to print thru the
network. At one time I was able to print from the other XP computer but
I`ve lost that ability (why I don`t know). But the main problem is in
getting the Win 98SE computer to print. It will place the item to be
printed in the queue to be printed but it just won`t print. As long as
the item remains in the printer`s queue it ties up the printer so that
nothing can be printed from the main computer. I have to remove the
items in the queue and reboot the computer to get the printer operative.
Any ideas where I should start to correct this problem? TIA

I guess nobody has an answer for this. I might add that the computers
are networked thru a Netgear router. I am now been able to print with
the second XP computer but trying to print with the 98SE computer is
just a no go. Even removing the items placed in the queue by the 98SE
computer is a hassel. They wont delete until the computer is booted.

Is the printer USB?

Why did I ask that question? Try a parallel port printer and tell us how it goes.
The idea was to see if I could network a printer I already have i.e. the
HP. Currently the 98SE computer has an Epson (USB) printer installed
which works OK but I want to get rid of it and use only one printer. The
HP is an all-in-one printer and it`s the one I want to use.

Mal,
1. Be aware that when you get this HP All-in-One network, there is a good chance that the Scanning and Copying function will not be available to the networked PC's. These functions for the Printer may only be available to the PC that the printer is connected to.

2. On the PC that the Printer is connected to.
Start button> Printer & Faxes> Right click the Printer> Sharing> Make sure it is set to be shared over a network. Also make sure that the Printer's Share name is less than 12 characters long, and that there are no spaces in the name.

3. On all the XP machines> Control Panel> Security> Firewall settings> Exception tab> Check box for File and Printer Sharing. If you are using a third party firewall program, make sure file and printer sharing is enabled.

4. On the W98 machine.
a. Install all appropriate printer driver and software for W98. As I said earlier, many All-in-One features cannot be networked.
b. With the Printer turned on from the XP machine. Go to Control Panel> Printers> Delete the Icon for the HP printer listed there.
c. Then select to Add a Printer> Follow instructions in the set-up wizard> Browse through your network to the Printer> And Add it. Reboot PC, and run test from W98 PC.

I found it easier to do steps 4b & 4c, when setting up a networked printer, than trying to fiddle with changing names of the printer. I use this method for connecting a printer to XP machines also. Some may say that is unnecessary, but it has worked with me.

I had done all of the above with the results noted in the first post.
There is only one area that`s fuzzy to me. It`1s a dumb question but is
apparently the sticking point. That`s item 4.a, "install all appropriate
printer driver and software". Where? On the Win 98 computer? On the
Win XP computer? On both? I`ve done all of these with the exception of
the one I think should work, i.e. the Win XP computer which has the
printer connected to it. When I try to install the Win 98 driver there I
can get only so far and then get the message "a newer version is already
installed and installation will be terminated" (or words to that
effect). How do I get around this obstacle?

Mal,
Then the only thing that I can suggest for your W98 machine is try one of the following.

With the Printer on, connected to an XP machine:
1. When you need to print something from the W98 machine, first copy/save the file to a folder that you share with the W98 & XP machine that you create. Open the folder, and then print from the XP machine.

2. Just install the W98 printer drivers on the W98 machine. And from the W98 machine:
a. Start button or Control Panel> Printers> Delete the HP printer entry there.
B. Select Add Printer> Browse to the Printer on the XP machine and Add it, make sure that the name of the Printer is less than 12 characters and has no spaces on it. That should be set as the share name on the XP PC.

Another thing you should check is any firewall settings that you have, especially on the XP PC that the printer is connected to. You need to make sure that "File & Printing Sharing" is enabled. If you are using a third party firewall on the W98 (or XP) machine, such as ZoneAlarm, Norton, McAfee, Sygate, etc... Make sure that file and printing sharing is enabled in those programs. Also if you are using a router on your network, check to see if there is a similar setting, that needs to be enabled.

That's all that I can think of doing.

Thanks, I could have saved a lot of frustration if I`d have seen that
before However I can use it as a network printer with my other XP computer.
