printer sharing with xp machine

At the risk of repeating many posts that I have read on many newsgroups I am
going to try. I have an XP machine with a Dell 962 printer attached to it.
The XP machine is wirelessly connected to a lynksys wireless router. This
router is connected to the new Vista machine. I believe that I have put all
of the patches on the XP machine that I have read about. I have made sure (I
think) that the XP print drivers are not on the Vista machine. I have
downloaded the vista drivers for the printer. The network is shared. I can
view files and see the printer from the vista machine on the xp machine. I
actually hooked the printer up to the vista machine and installed it with the
vista print drivers locally. Then I unhooked it and hooked it back up to the
XP machine. Then I changed the port on the vista machine to \\name of xp
machine\name of printer. Everything looks like it should work. The printer
says online and ready. Then when I try to print a test page I get a peer to
peer message that says communication is not available. I don't know what
else to do! Yes, I think I have checked fire walls and virus software and
everything else. Please help! Although from what I've seen I'm just not
sure it can be done.

TIA,
Kirsten

Assuming all other setting/connections are correct.
Install the Vista Driver for you printer on both PCs (Vista&XP)!!!!
On the PC without to printer attached, select > Do not share this printer.

I did and my printer stopped working on my xp machine and I had to spend the
next hour getting it working again! Should it be installed as another
printer? Should I have chosen network or local install. Are you sure my xp
machine will like the vista drivers because it sure didn't seem like it. The
printer icon was still showing but when I tried to print a test page it said
the drivers weren't installed. Ideas? Thanks.

Yes, I found that link weeks ago and followed all of the steps. That is how
I got network sharing working. The XP machine is running Norton AV and the
Vista machine is running live onecare.
