"Printer settings could not be Saved. Operation not Completed."

I've read many posts on this but I'm not getting this resolved.
I'm on the PC that has the printer connected via USB.
The printer works.
I have administrator priviledges.
I have shut off the firewall.
I'm not running a virus detector
(wow, do I feel vulnerable now).
I have a work group setup. Default to mshome.
I have "File and Printer Sharing for Microsoft Networks" in the Local Area
Connections Properties popup.

When I go to "start/control panel/Printers and Fax" and select the printer
and then select "Share this printer" and then click Apply I get:
"Printer settings could not be Saved. Operation not Completed."

I don't know what else to try.
Any suggestions?

This is the exact same problem as I've just discovered I have.
I cannot change any of the settings on my HP Deskjet 840c (connected by
parallel port) which has recently changed machine and is needing to be shared.

I have emailed HP also although I get the impression that this is more of an
XP issue.

Any help appreciated.
