Printer response on network is very slow

We installed two printers on the LAN, the installations went smoothly.

However, the printer response time is now very slow. For example, just
trying to open the Properties for either printer can take around 30 seconds!
Sending a simple document also seems to take the initial 30 seconds before
the printer begins printing.

When the printers were connected via the parallel ports, they both responded
immediately, so I'm sure the problem is with the LAN, but where???

Are they running firewalls?

There are no firewalls in the network. The XP firewall is disabled.

There aren't any anti-virus programs running, either.

Also, FWIW, the Internet works fine - there is no delay.
