Printer prints once then hangs up - 6161 error

the first time I print a document to a local printer it seems to work.
Sometimes it prints immediately, sometimes it takes minutes to start
printing - computer otherwise idle.
Happens from a networked computer also,
both systems set to spool and start printing immediately.

The next time I print, I get this error

Event error 6161

The document Participating Agent Addendum - Agent Level (2006) BAR.pdf
owned by cher failed to print on printer hp photosmart 1115 series.
Data type: NT EMF 1.008. Size of the spool file in bytes: 92888.
Number of bytes printed: 0. Total number of pages in the document: 1.
Number of pages printed: 0. Client machine: \\user1. Win32 error code
returned by the print processor: 259 (0x103).

With the other printer I get an immediate error. With the above
printer, it usually take a long time for it to error out.

Sometimes, after printing one page, the printer activity led shows
that it is receiving the second page, then it stops and nothing
prints.

what can be wrong?

Is the error report 31 ERROR_GEN_FAILURE <--> 0xc0000001 STATUS_UNSUCCESSFUL
like that ?

the terse error message just says it failed.
the one I listed is from the event log.

ALSO, sometimes when printing a simple (text only form fill) PDF file
of 384k bytes it generates over 40Mbyte print file and take 10 min
before it starts printing.

That's an Acrobat Reader issue. Check for updates
for whatever version you have...
