Printer driver updates via Windows Update?

L

Linn Kubler

Hi,

We are using Windows XP Pro sp3 on our corporate domain, Windows 2003. To
accomdate networked printer installations so all users can use them I
utilize the rundll32 printui.dll command to install the printer drivers.

When I use Windows Update, or Microsoft Update, to update the computers I
see there are drivers available for some of our printers. I select them for
installation but they always fail and it doesn't look like the driver is
updating. I've even tried updating the server with hopes that the driver
would propogate but no luck.

So, what's the trick? What do I need to do to get the drivers updated on
these systems?

Thanks in advance,
Linn

Windows update will update the drivers based on a plug and play ID. When
the printer was not added to the USB or parallel bus of the machine you will
not get the new driver. I believe the WU group addressed this in Win7.
Anyway, installing the new print driver on the server will propagate the
driver to the XP client machines.
