printer connected to HP jet direct external box

Hi all,
here's my setup:
server 2000 sp4
networked 24 pin okidata printer using HP jetdirect box
external
using 3rd party billing program that spools claims
Problem: once the user starts the spooling if the
screensaver or if the user moves the mouse and even
points to another icon then the spooling freezes and the
program shows not responding.
Could this be a spoooler problem, software vendor says
not their problem

first thing i would do is make sure i have the most up to date drivers for
printer. i am assuming you are not initiating the spool from server, but
from a network client sharing printer. if possible, try connecting printer
directly to pc. there could be an issue with jet direct negotiating with
printer and/or program. it sounds like a software problem to me, but
vendors will rarely admit it until you have them up against a wall with a
mountain of evidence. if you have a differnt kind of printer, you could try
that too.
