Print to a file

I followed KB article 321379 to print out the directory listing of a folder.

It works fine to the default printer, but I'd like to print to a file so
that I can drag that file into Excel.

My question is how do I make it print to a file rather than the default
printer? (No dialog box is displayed with the "print to file" check box..)
Or, how do I set up a file as the default printer?

Thanks,
E-Jo

When you print to a file, the file in use is coded just as
it would be if sent to a particular printer. Then the file
can be selected with a prn command and it will print. It
can also be used to convert a document to a PDF with a third
party program such as WIN2PDF.

You cannot drag a printed file into Excel. If you want to
include data in Excel, export the data in a compatible
format, such a CSV.

Thanks guys, but when I tried Karenware the print-to-file box was greyed
out. Also, I'm not sure what is meant by the CSV format. and how to use it.

CSV means you set the format of a saved file to "comma
separated values" which is a format that allows databases
and spreadsheets to import and export data to any program.

With the Directory printer program you use the save to disk button, instead
of trying to print to a file. It saves the folders contents into a text file
on your drive that can be saved, viewed, and printed.

You could, if you wanted, go to your Printers list (Start > Control Panel >
Printers), double-click the Add New Printer, select Local Printer, and
scroll down the list of ports until you see "FILE: Print to File". I
personally wouldn't recommend this as a way to go, but I figured I'd give
the option if you wanted to follow that path.

Thanks purplehaz, your suggestions re Karenware were very valuable and the
program does seem to be very versatile.

Thanks to Jim Darrell and Tony as well for their valuable info and
suggestions.
