Print Server

Hi,

I'm trying to figure out the best way to share my printer on my
network. Here is my current setup:

-USB cable from printer goes directly into my basement PC
-Basement and upstairs PC are both connected to my router
-Upstairs PC communicates with downstairs PC and is able to print

The problem is, is that if I have my basement PC powered off, I am
unable to print on my upstairs PC because of the USB connection.
Therefore, my question is: what is the best setup to print from my
upstairs PC without the downstairs one being turned on?

I was thinking that a print server may do this, but am somewhat unsure
of how they work. Would one give me the ability to plug the printer's
USB cable into the print server and then connect the print server to
one of the ethernet ports on my router? Thus giving me the ability to
print so long as the router and printer are powered on?

Thanks.

You neglected to say what printer you have. Some are "network ready" and
can be plugged directly into a hub for every computer to access.

It's an HP PSC2210. I checked the back and did not see any RJ-45 ports
for an ethernet cable.

Thanks.

Print servers are like $10 on Ebay. Even the wireless one's are cheap.
With that said, what would justify me spending $143 versus $20 or so?

Reading comprehension was not a good subject for you, eh? Read what I said.
I said "a lot of money", not $20.

So instead of questioning what people suggest part with the $20 and fix the
problem.

Sharing the PSC 2210 for printing should be possible with a low cost
server, but it may not be possible to get the scanner functions over the
network. I used a JetDirect 175 with a PSC 2210 a few years ago but do
not remember if scanning was supported. Try a Google search for "PSC
2210 print server" for various models that support the PSC 2210.

It's called selective comprehension. I retain what I deem important.
For example, I retained Bob's response because it's actually helpful,
but not your misinformed post and subsequent attempt at a joke.

By the way, this is the last time I'm reading this post so if you try
and turn it into some type of flaming war, I won't be here to read it.

Thanks again Bob.

Thanks for the appropriate response Bob.

Everyone says that, then they read every word after.
