Do you have one of those keyboards with the F Lock key?

Toggle it off and try again.

No, I did see that mentioned in the MS Knowledge Base.

Interestingly enough, I just started MS Word and hit Print Screen and lo and
behold it works. It is as if the print screen "service" (if there is such a
thing) is not loading when XP boots....

It sounds like you have this problem.

Word clears the Windows Clipboard.

If Word came installed as part of Works Suite then the Microsoft Works
Suite Add-in for Word (COM Add-in) is known to clear the contents of the
Windows Clipboard when Word starts.

Start Word first, then copy and paste.

Or follow the procedures here to remove the Works Suite add-in.

WD The Windows Clipboard Content is Modified When Word Starts
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/555173

This applies to Word 97, Word 2000, Word 2002 and Word 2003.

You will be way ahead to remove the Works Suite add-in, then you do not have
to remember to start Word first before copying. Or using Print Scrn.

Ok, I uninstalled the Works Suite Add-In. Checked the COMS section of word
and it does not show up. So far so good.

Then I close everything and have my desktop showing. Hit print screen, open
notepad, and nothing is there to paste.

Open Word and hit print screen and can past snap shot of desktop in Word
just fine. Leaving Word open I open notepad and nothing there to paste.
Then I think, hmmm how about Wordpad. Lo and behold I can paste into wordpad
whether Word is open or closed.

So, is it just my misunderstanding of printscreen? I thought I should be
able to hit printscreen and paste into anything that would accept paste.....

The Print Screen key, is often abbreviated as Print Scrn.

Print Scrn key copies everything on your screen.

The sole function of this key is to take a snapshot or picture of your
computer screen and copy it to the clipboard.

Alt key+ Print Scrn key
[[Will take a screenshot of the currently selected window, not the entire
screen like the normal screenshot function. This allows you to target that
specific window that you have open and nothing else. No more cropping those
screenshots to grab the content you were after!]]

You have to paste the image in to Paint, Wordpad, Word or some other program
that will handle images.

The only thing that you can paste into Notepad is text.

Try it with WordPad instead. You can paste graphics and/or text into
WordPad.

Start | Run | Type: wordpad | Click OK

Try it with Paint. You can only paste graphics into Paint, not text.

Start | Run | Type: mspaint | Click OK

Use Ctrl + V to Paste or Click on Edit and then Paste.
Ctrl + V works with Word, WordPad and Paint.

If you want to save your Print Scrn image to a file, paste it into Paint.
Edit it however you like.
Click File, click Save As.
Save As dialog will popup.
Click the V on the Save as type box and select JPEG
(*.JPG,*JPRG,*JPE,*JFIF).
It defaults to .bmp and .bmp files are about ten times larger than .jpg
files.

Try this little trick.
Locate a .jpg or other picture file.
Right click it and select Copy.
Try to Paste into Word, WordPad and Paint.

With Word you do not even have to open the picture file to Paste it.
With Paint, it doesn't work.
With WordPad if you double click the icon, the picture will open in Windows
Picture and Fax Viewer.

Paint and WordPad are located on the Start Menu.

Start\All Programs\Accessories\

In Paint, click Edit and then Select All or (Ctrl + A).

Move the picture around to edit the size.

Move it to the left and move it up.

Then use the resize tabs on the bottom and the right to resize the white
space and whatever else you want to remove.

I know of no instructions on how to do this exactly, you have to mess around
and learn how to do it.

Some times if you cannot see the resize tab on the right you can click on
Image on the Menu bar and then click on Attributes. Resize the Width
smaller by 10 pixels and click OK. Keep doing that until you can see the
right hand resize tab.

Tip: Use Save As and rename the original file to OriginalName2 or something
and edit the 2 file, that way if you mess up you still have the original to
Save As again.
