Print Preview changes format and font of Word 2003 document

When I opened a Word 2003 document the font and format is correct but when I
preview the document, the formatting and font seems to have changed and
closing the preview page changed the original format and font to the same as
what was previewed.(what you see is what you get). Why is this strange
situation occurring?
 
The only thing I can suggest is that printing or switching to Print Preview
will update fields. If the document consists largely of fields, that may be
part of the problem.
