Print on Disk

LightScribe allows you to etch images onto LightScribe optical disks (DVD-R,
DVD-RW, CD-R, CD-RW, etc) but is it only 2 - 4 colours ( etching into the 2 -
4 coloured layers on the disks surface)

Commercial DVD’s have very nice artwork and photos etched onto the disk, how
do you do that at home with out buying an $8,000US special disk etcher /
printer.

XP does not appear to support integrated disk etching, just integrated
burning to CD media only, and DVD media on Vista.

There are no real shortcuts to accomplish this that I have been able to find. Printing directly to the disk requires special hardware and coated disks. The only other option is labels and these are always problematic IMO.

Maybe if coated disks become more popular, MS may consider including
integrated etching in future OS's.

The multilayered coated disks should give 2 - 4 colours (2006).

Most good Disk burners, Light-On, etc, now offer
LightScribe, and some PC's have LightScribe capable
optical burners installed, Hp (2006), Dell (2007), etc.

But public really needs more multi-color coated disks
retailing in the chain stores, Hello Mr Walmart, Mr Kmart
please stock colored coated disks.

Black on Gold is ok, but please more colors.

LightScribe CDs and DVDs have a special coating that
interacts with the laser from your LightScribe-enabled
drive. You must use LightScribe media (CDs and DVDs)
in order to burn a label onto your discs.

A few things to remember about LightScribe media:

-LightScribe discs are gold, and the designs appear in
grayscale, similar to a black-and-white photograph (even
if you create your design in full color).

-New color background discs will be available in 2006.

-Any LightScribe media works in any LightScribe drive.
Currently, media is available in CD-R, DVD+R and DVD-R.

-Software and media carry the LightScribe logo on the packaging."

MS if you are nice to LightScribe they may allow you to
licence their burning software for integration into future MS
OS's, or maybe they won't, its worth asking them.

Creating a LightScribe Label

Burning a label with LightScribe is easy.

To start, you need to run LightScribe supported labeling software. The label
software often can be launched as a separate application that is included
with your data burning application suite.

Depending on the labeling software you use, you can create a label before or
after you burn the disc content.

To burn a label, you must flip the disc over and place it label-side down in
the drive tray.

LightScribe labels are monochrome (grayscale) or color, depending on the
type of coated disk in use.

Labels can be a simple title, or you can get more creative by adding
backgrounds and images. The capabilities will depend on your labeling
application.

SureThing CD Labeler (SE Edition)
Roxio Easy Media Creator
MS Intergrated LightScribe Services (2008) maybe if MS get their act together.
