Print Color Problem

I'm not sure if this is a software or a hardware issue. I'm running Windows
2000 SP4 and I'm using an old Hewlett Packard 722C printer. I'm using an
Epson V200 flatbed scanner. Up to last week, I was able to print text in
black font. Now, MS Word and jpeg texts are printed in a magenta color, as
are scans. However, test pages print in black ink, as do the cartridge
alignment pages. Notepad also prints out in black ink. This problem started
when I was printing out a scanned image and the color changed from blue to
magenta during mid-printing. Would anyone be able help me find out why I
can't print most documents in black ink? Please let me know what further
information I may need to provide.

Many printers will print "black" by mixing the color ink, depending on
how the app transmits the data. You can usually override it to black in
the print driver to always be black and white. There may also be a
problem with the color cartidge. Try printing a "block" of cyan and one
of yellow and see if that works. Or you "inadvertantly" updated the
print driver with a "newer" but not quite compatible version. You can
check them in the Print Server Properties, Driver tab, and "roll them
back" there.

The only thing I've done is to install a scanner which may have corrupted
the printer driver. Or it could be that the tri-color cartridge is low on
ink. I don't know what color combo might create gray but it will have to
wait until I can buy a new cartridge. Thanks for your reply.

There's both a black ink cartridge and a tricolor cartridge. The color
cartridge is low on ink so that may be the problem right there. However, I
tried your suggestion on overriding the print color to black and white--it
worked. Thanks, Bob.
