I have 2 XP's installed (XP0 & XP1) where XP1 is clone
of XP0 done after SP1 and has only 'basic' apps-
ZApro,AV, DI6, PM7. It has no scanner, webcam, VR,
APS8, games, ...

Yet Device Mgr shows Primary IDE Device 0 in XP0 is
usung PIO not DMA as it is in XP1. Transfer Mode in
both = 'DMA if available'. Primary IDE Device 1 is not
being used on both. I think DMA is ~3X faster & I
recall that the fix is to either to uninstall PRIMARY
or MASTER IDE Controller. Maybe not!

Red flags r popping up like mushrooms after a good rain
storm :)

Your help is MUCH appreciated. Thanks- bye- Larry

Any advise is my attempt to contribute more than I have received but I can only assure you that it works on my PC. GOOD LUCK.

Check your motherboard manufacturers web site. They should have support
information and drivers to download.
You need to uninstall and reinstall the updated drivers.
After reading your message again, are both XP installs on the same or
different hard drive or partitions?
You need to clarify your configuration better.

This happens if there has been an unacceptable rate of errors on the
device: the system falls back on PIO and sticks, even if the cause has
been removed.

Check the cabling; you need a proper 80 wire UDMA cable; and the drive
must be on the end socket, with the middle one unused (otherwise you
have an unterminated length of cable merrily reflecting signals back
and interfering).

Then in Device Manager, select the master level controller, above
Primary Channel, Action - Remove, and OK out to reboot and let PnP try
again

Try this http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;247951
and try uninstall device reboot then install

I notice I had alot of Foundnnn files. Subtle point
that XP1 didnt have same problem cause it's hardly ever
run/defraged/scanned cause it's a backup OS.

Was OK

It was last entry -begins with VIA on my PC but does
say Master Controller. After 2 restarts all IDE's r on
DMA.

I had noticed that DI6 running in DOS images XP0 @
140MB/min & XP1 @ 160MB/min- due 2 DMA vs PIO?

U hit nail right on head Alex. Thx mucho.

Happy Holidays- Larry
