I am totally confused on the pricing model for Windows XP Embedded.
This page
(http://www.microsoft.com/windowsembedded/en-us/products/wexpe/default.mspx)
says:

$995 Runtime
$90 (per unit shipped)

What is the runtime? What is a unit? I'm basically trying to
understand the cost PER DEVICE for licensing costs I'll have to worry
about if I go with Windows XP Embedded.

Could somebody please explain that in layman's terms?

Thank you in advance,

Sean

That's your image designer, that you as a developer need to buy in order
to configure XPe. It's a one-time, up-front cost.

For most applications, "Unit" = "device". For these purposes, a unit is
a single installation of XPe that you ship out. If you were shipping
some kind of device that had two separate computers in it, each with
their own installation of XPe, that would be two units for licensing
purposes.

So the final cost per device is probably $90 + ( 995 / (the number you
sell) )

Thank you very much. That clears everything up.
